How to Lose Weight and
Be Healthier By Drinking More Water
by Dr. Michael Geery

The famous actor, WC Fields was known to have said "I never drink water because of the disgusting things that fish do in it." Although the statement may have made us laugh over the years, really is at odds with our potential good health and well being.

Perhaps his somewhat portly shape and puffy nose were signs that he adhered to this philosophy religiously. If however, you have a desire to lose some of that portly puffiness you've been carrying around you might want to consider drinking more water as an aid to help you lose weight but other things that ail you as well.

Countless studies over the years indicate that we don't drink enough water, and drinking things like sugary sodas and caffeinated or alcoholic beverages is not a good substitute, especially if one is trying to lose weight. Sodas can ad countless calories and caffeine and alcohol dehydrate the body and prevent it from performing its most basic functions properly.

Seventy-five percent of your body is made up of water. This alone will tell you that in the absence of sufficient water your body will not work correctly. Things like metabolism (including the metabolism of fat), digestion, absorption of food, elimination of waste, lubrication of the joints, elasticity of the skin, regulating of body temperature and many more functions depend on the body being properly hydrated.

You've probably heard or read that some people don't gain weight because they have a "fast" or "active" metabolism. This is true. A more active metabolism will help keep the fat away.

Metabolism is the body process in which food is converted into the energy and products needed to sustain life. When you eat or drink your body metabolizes what you ingest. You can also think of the process of metabolizing as the process burning calories. The more food you eat, the more your metabolism has to work. This is why, to lose weight, you're better off eating a greater number of smaller meals each day rather than three large meals.

Here's how drinking plenty of water helps keep the weight off. If the kidneys don't get enough water, some of their load is dumped on the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. But if the liver has to do some of the kidney's work, it cannot work at full capacity. As a result, the liver metabolizes less fat, which means that more fat remains stored in the body and weight loss stops!

When you drink less water than the body needs it sees the shortage as a threat to survival and will begin to retain more water. Water reserves are stored in places outside the cells, and shows up in your body as bloat.

The best way to lose the extra water weight is to drink plenty of water, then the stored water will be released.

Your body also metabolizes water, which means drinking a plenty of water during the day puts your metabolism to work which helps burn fat. The best "fat burning" water to drink is cold water. Your metabolism has to work even more to warm the cold water so that it matches your body temperature.

Water is also a natural appetite suppressant. Some studies also indicate that the body doesn't differentiate between hunger and thirst so, that craving for food could actually be a craving for water.

Most experts suggest that you should drink 8ozs of water about 20-30 minutes before a meal (not during, as it will dilute your digestive juices) and spread out your intake over the day, drinking up to eight 8oz glasses a day. You will most likely go through an adjustment period of having to make a few more trips to the bathroom than you normally would but eventually that will also adjust itself.

Since we lose water while we sleep a good habit to get into is to drink a glass of water (preferably not tap water) upon rising. This can also help eliminate any toxins that the body has tried to cast off during the night, which may be why we are stiffer and slower in the mornings as we age. A glass of water first thing will help flush these away. Continue throughout the day then mid morning and afternoon and before meals.

Water is an effective, healthy and inexpensive solution to being overweight – so drink up and get slim!
